![]() I'll be taking my 13-year-old daughter to see "The King's Speech" this weekend, and we wouldn't mind our younger children seeing it when it's on Netflix (though we might fast-forward through the one scene of swearing so as not to inspire any 7-year-old copycats, not that that's likely given the context). More than a few PG-13 movies have all those elements and are much more inappropriate for younger viewers overall than any moment in this "R" film. ![]() I not only agree with that statement- I would go farther. 'While we respect the MPAA,' said owner Harvey Weinstein, 'I think we can all agree that we are living with an outdated ratings system that gives torture porn, horror and ultraviolent films the same rating as films with so-called inappropriate language.'" Indeed, as the Plugged In Online review reports, "The Weinstein Company sued the MPAA for assigning The King's Speech an R rating. There is one short scene in which the speech therapist encourages fluency by having the prince say swear words repeatedly. Since I'm a confirmed Janeite, I was quick to spot a little interesting casting: the wife of Lionel Logue is played by Jennifer Ehle, who was Lizzie Bennet opposite Colin Firth's Darcy in the BBC miniseries of "Pride & Prejudice" that made Firth a star back in the 1990s.īut we were completely perplexed as to why the film received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. My husband and I saw the movie last weekend and we loved it we found it beautifully made and acted. When his older brother Edward abdicates the throne so that he can marry divorcee Wallis Simpson, Albert becomes King George VI and is able to rise to the task of leading the nation during WWII in the age of radio and newsreels. "The King's Speech" is based on the true story of Prince Albert, who struggled with stuttering during his life, and is helped by speech therapist & actor Lionel Logue. Next week when the Oscar nominations are announced, I won't be surprised to see this wonderful film getting quite a few nominations. Feel free to listen to ReelBlend's full interview with O'Connor below.Have you seen "The King's Speech" yet? The small independent film is getting lots of awards and nominations-Colin Firth won a Golden Globe for best actor, the film earned 14 nominations by the BAFTA, the British equivilent of the Oscars. The man set out to make an intriguing character study over a stock sports movie, and with a dedication to reality, he achieved that goal. There are worse reasons to obtain an R-rating for a film like The Way Back, but from the way that Gavin O’Connor describes the process above, it feels like a badge of honor. We were just trying to honor the authenticity of the character and the story. Maybe it’ll affect us at the box office, but we weren’t thinking that way. So it could have been easy but it just didn’t smell authentic. And the kids use language that feels real to me. There was a language, and that just felt real to me. I just wanted to be honest and authentic. ![]() Gavin O’Connor understands this as well as anyone, and he further reinforced this with his continued explanation of how integral the reality of these characters is to the overall film: But the swearing is actually a crucial part to the transformation we see taking place on screen. Attaining its rating for “language throughout including some sexual references,” nothing could be further from the truth. Looking at the official description for The Way Back’s official R-rating from the MPAA, it’s basically a case of a film doing what it says on the tin. ![]() Would you finance the film for us?’ And he read the script that we gave him, he ran numbers with whoever runs numbers at the studio, and he said ‘If you can do it for this number, go make the movie and I’ll see you at the premiere.’ But it’s something we really want to make. What happened was when Ben and I decided to make the movie, and we took it to Toby Emmerich at Warner Bros., we just said ‘I know you guys don’t make these kind of movies. It was the language in the script that Brad had written. More specifically, O’Connor laid out how that particular factor effected the entire production of the film, as follows: During his recent appearance on the ReelBlend podcast, co-writer/director Gavin O’Connor talked about how his co-writer Brad Inglesby originated The Way Back’s path to a rated R release, thanks to the specific quality of the language used in the film’s script. ![]()

I actually tried it again earlier today and it still has the same stupid problems as they had at launch. The only good thing about The Crew is the world map, there is nothing else good about it. I bet The Crew is quite cheap as well nowadays. Still arcadey, but based on actual physics, not on voodoo magic and shit coding. As far as I remember the handling was ok too. If not else it gives you this huge map, quite a lot of cars, albeit generic (so is the garage in NFS), visual tuning options for days and a massive map with varied terrain. I do like the tasteful bespoke body kits on some of the cars. So compared to them I remember it as really, really average, but quite enjoyable. There wasn't anything fundamentally wrong with it, the problem was it got released when Horizon 2 and Driveclub were still new and made by studios that had experience with the genre. and to finish the outlaw missions you literally have to drive 30mph dragging the cop behind, while crashing into every destructible prop just to rack up the fine and get more heat. Honestly, they did it adequately with Rivals, so what the hell went wrong here? Not to mention how friggin dramatic it gets once a cop starts ''chasing'' you, only to realise that you're unintentionally escaping after 10sec. Changing camshafts and pistons on an RX7 with a rotary engine is bullshit for a game that tries so hard to put accent on car and tuning culture, or the fact that the police AI is straight up retarded. I still enjoyed my 10 hours in EA access and was on the verge of buying it but the little things that are completely disregarded by the devs piss me off.
